Chamomile Herb

August 20, 2010 By: ProHerbalist Category: Tips

Roman and German Chamomile herbs are two of the most well-known and loved herbs in the Materia Medica of herbalists, modern and ancient.  Chamomile is a favorite folk remedy of many nations and tribes and has been cultivated in many areas throughout the world.  It is useful to help alleviate mild insomnia and gastro-intestinal upsets and its efficacy is time tested and clinically proven.

Roman Chamomile, Chamaemelum nobilis, in a tea or tincture form, can be very helpful in for gastro-intestinal spasms and is also used to minimize uterine cramps during menstruation (1).   Its bitter principles give it mild digestant properties which minimize gas and bloating after meals.  Chamomile tea sipped before and during a meal has a calming effect and, along with slower eating, helps promote better digestion and assimilation of foods.  For occasional constipation, Roman Chamomile has a gentle laxative effect when the infusion is drunk over a period of three or four consecutive days.

German Chamomile, Matricaria recutita, is a little better-tasting than the Roman variety and tends to be favored by children.  The infusion can be used for teething, irritability, nightmares, and insomnia in children (2).  German Chamomile is calming for people who are generally of a nervous or high-strung nature, and it helps them to remain calm during their average work day.

It is important to decide which species is indicated episode free gems for use before making a purchase.  There are similarities between both but also some distinctions.  The constituents and the energetics vary between the two.  Both herbs, however, are antiinflammatory and antispasmotic.

Contraindication:  Chamomile is a member of the Asteraceae family and is contraindicated for people with ragweed allergies.
